Update!?

Sun Dec 7, 2008, 1:49 AM
So it's never been a secret that I fail to keep up with updating things like this deviantart page on a regular basis. But, I mean, if I did update regularly, it wouldn't be as special and surprising as these once every few months or so updates, would it?

New things: I have my own website now. You can visit it here at EricJustinWhite.com. Chances are I'll be updating that on a much more constant basis, seeing as how I'm actually paying for my own domain name and hosting and all that jazz. I'll try to remember to update Deviantart while I'm at it, but hours seem to turn into minutes these days.

Also: I'm currently accepting commissions for both sculptural work and custom wood furniture. I've sold a few pieces recently and am very interested in getting to work on something new. If you are interested, or have any questions, please feel free to contact me at Eric@EricJustinWhite.com.

Long time, no update.

Sun May 18, 2008, 10:24 AM
So I realize it's been quite a long time since I've updated my journal or put up any new work or anything of that nature. It's been one heck of a semester, and now that it's finally over I'm taking the time to take a breath of fresh air. Of course, my body knew not to let me get sick during the insanity of final exams, so I came down with a case of strep throat a few days after my last exam, and am just now recovering from that. I've got a lot of new work, some of it I'm extremely proud of, some of it not so much, but I can promise at least 5 or 6 new works that I'm very fond of will be up here shortly. Also, I'm working on a new website which I will post the link to shortly when I get it all finished like I want it.

In the meantime, go look at hannajubran.com. He's one of my sculpture professors here at ECU, and a very talented artist.

More soon.

New Work. Also, week of death.

Wed Feb 13, 2008, 2:49 AM
So it took scholarship applications being due this past monday for me to really get on photographing all my new work, and now I officially have all of my finished work up here. Okay, that's a lie, there are a few exceptions to that regarding work I don't currently have access to, but really, It's close enough.

I was actually quite surprised and very pleased by the response I got to the work I just posted. Lots of comments and faves, much more than I'm used to, and I really appreciate everyone who took the time to look at my stuff and leave a few kind words or a short critique. Thank you all so much.

As far as life and such goes right now, I'm kind of smack dab in the middle of the week of death. Besides having a ridiculously horrible cold, I think just about everything in the world had to happen or be due this week. Lots of volunteer work for Art Ed (around 10 hours total), scholarship submissions due, Undergrad Exhibition work and forms due, a test in geography, a wax figurative sculpture due (which I completed earlier today, and will be cast on thursday) and a print due (which I miraculously got an extension on without even asking for it because I'm sick). Needless to say, I've gotten very little sleep, (if me posting this journal at 5:45 AM didn't already give that away) which hasn't helped out my cold at all. A side effect of that is that I'm taking pseudoephedrine for my cold, which kind of has the effect of taking speed or having an IV drip of caffeine for me. This all comes at the price of possibly seeing things, being really loopy and feeling like my hair is standing on end or my head is floating a few feet above my body, but really, being able to breathe is worth it.

Anyway, enough procrastination. Thanks again to everyone for taking the time to look at my work, and super thanks to those actually dedicated enough to read my rambling journals and get far enough to see this.

Printmaking, Sculpture and Wood, oh my.

Tue Jan 29, 2008, 9:06 PM
So it's been well over a month since my last journal and I figured an update would be nice.

Printmaking = the bane of my existence, in the sense that it takes up a ridiculous amount of time out of my life in comparison to other things, and that it's not something that interests me too terribly much, but a required course. On a better note, I'm feeling much better about it now than I was a week ago, so that's good. Unfortunately, I'll be spending the rest of the night carving linoleum and will probably change my mind about it around 5 AM when I'm halfway done.

Sculpture = Scary as crap, but one of the best classes I've ever taken. My class is a combined section for Studio I and Studio IV, meaning half the people in my class are much more advanced than I am, but we're all doing the same exact projects, and critiquing at the same exact time. That pretty much means that I have to work my butt off to try and be able to compare with kids who have already taken multiple sculpture classes before this one and have already submitted been admitted into the sculpture program. Scary stuff, but it pushes me to do well, which is nice. We've already completed our first casting, an aluminum vapo casting in loose sand, something completely new to me. My casting kind of failed, really, but learning the process was quite amazing, and us Studio I kids actually got to take care of all of the skimming and pouring and whatnot, and it was my job to be at the pouring end and take care of that, which was amazing.

Wood Design = something that might actually make me change my mind about concentrating in sculpture, which is saying something. I pretty much love everything about wood, so it's not too hard for me to see myself concentrating in it. We're only going to have 3 projects throughout the semester, which is nice because that leaves me a lot of room to be more ambitious and take my time with my work in there. The first project is a "box" which really doesn't mean all that much except it has to be a container of some sort. I'm planning on doing mine with some complex diagonal lines and compound miter joints. Exciting stuff.

So, as far as getting new work up here, I realize I'm quite behind. My sister is still planning on photographing all my work, but she's been crazy busy lately so I'm not sure when that will happen. I've got quite a few pieces from my sculpture class last semester as well as a couple of paintings that I will try and snap some pics of to throw up here until that happens, and will also try and get up some pictures of my work as it's completed this semester, rather than waiting around to do it all at once. Can't make any promises, but I'll try.

Semester 3 = Done!

Sat Dec 15, 2007, 9:47 PM
So I'm finally done with everything for the semester and I'm super excited and relieved. Back home for Christmas break and loving it, but I seriously can't wait to get back and start creating more art. All I have with me here is a tiny sketchbook, because I knew if I actually brought my supplies home I wouldn't touch them, but if I didn't I'd be dying to do something. Hopefully this way I'll return to Greenville with a million new ideas sketched out and I'll have plenty to do there.

My sister, an excellent photographer, has agreed to professionally photograph all of my work for me in return for a painting, so hopefully that means I'll have some high-quality photographs of my new work up here sometime soon, as well as some better shots of the older stuff. Exciting!

Life pretty much rocks. That's also a plus.
